When a Del Mar dentist asked us to completely reimagine her practice, we said yes before she finished the sentence. Meet Smiles by Pai — a 600-square-foot dental office transformed from purely functional into something genuinely restorative.

The space hadn’t been touched in over twenty years. It was strictly functional — but it lacked any of the comfort, ease, or calm that both patients and staff deserved. What our client envisioned was something more: a high-end spa sensibility, elevated and serene, layered with the warmth of home. We share that belief — that a space is transformed not only by how it looks, but by how it feels and functions. Translating that vision into 600 square feet became the job.
Accent Lighting: The Jewelry of the Space
Accent lighting is the jewelry of a room — the element that adds warmth, depth, and personality. In a dental office especially, thoughtful lighting does more than illuminate. It creates a calm, welcoming environment for patients while quietly showcasing the architectural details worth noticing. These subtle layers balance the clinical nature of the practice, turning a purely functional setting into one that feels polished and intentional.
We typically recommend incorporating 2–3 layers of lighting within a space:

Starting Fresh
To create the space our client envisioned, we gutted what was there entirely. With only 600 square feet to work with, every wall, surface, and detail had to be reimagined — and every inch had to earn its place, balancing beauty with function at every turn.
New flooring, walls, doors, tile, paint, wallpaper, wood cabinetry, countertops, and window coverings — layered with recessed LED lighting and a few carefully placed accent fixtures — set the tone the moment you walk through the door. Our goal was a space that felt calming, private, and boutique: somewhere clients feel instantly at ease.
The palette leaned coastal and serene — warm whites, natural wood accents, soft blues — a subtle nod to Del Mar’s ocean views, elevated with genuine spa-like sophistication.
Reception: A Warm Welcome
Forget the standard waiting room. We designed this reception area to feel like a lounge — comfortable, calm, and thoughtfully styled. Layered textures, curated artwork, and a custom tambour wood desk give the space a refined, welcoming energy, supported by subtle accent lighting, considered signage, and inviting seating. Soft white linen Roman shades and beige drapery complete the feeling of being somewhere that genuinely cares for you the moment you sit down.
Treatment Rooms: Calm & Functional
Each treatment room was designed to put patients at ease while remaining clean and highly functional. Neutral tones and soft window coverings diffuse natural light, creating a relaxed atmosphere throughout. Custom cabinetry keeps clutter entirely out of sight, while every material we specified balances durability with comfort.
The result is a dental office that feels polished, modern, and serene — as professional as it is welcoming. The team enjoys working here just as much as their patients enjoy visiting.
State-of-the-Art Technology and Thoughtful Workflow
This office was designed with patient comfort and clinical excellence held in equal regard. Our client prioritized state-of-the-art dental equipment from Patterson, ensuring every patient receives the highest level of care.
Dr. Pai’s approach goes beyond treating teeth — she restores balance, crafting smiles that support facial structure, help prevent premature aging, and protect long-term oral health with minimal intervention. A dedicated sterilization zone was planned for optimal flow, where every instrument is cleaned, disinfected, and organized to the highest hygiene standard while keeping the day’s workflow effortless.
Together, these elements reflect a shared commitment to cutting-edge care and thoughtful design — an environment where patients feel confident, comfortable, and genuinely well cared for.
A Restroom with Natural Warmth and Modern Ease
Our client wanted a restroom that felt calm, natural, and beautifully balanced. We selected tile in soft, earthy tones with a subtle pottery-like texture for warmth and an organic touch. A peel-and-stick faux grasscloth wallpaper adds depth and a refined textural accent without overwhelming the small footprint.
To maximize functionality, we incorporated an oversized medicine cabinet for additional storage and an organically shaped wall sconce that ties the room together with a soft, inviting glow. A modern wall-mounted faucet finishes the look — the right blend of form and function.
Designed with Staff in Mind
The team experience matters just as much as the patient experience. The layout supports an efficient daily workflow while maintaining a polished, cohesive aesthetic throughout.
Dr. Pai’s private office was designed to be both calm and highly adaptable — a space where focus, creativity, and patient care intersect seamlessly. Soft tones, natural textures, and layered lighting create a serene environment that supports concentration and clarity, while the room flexes easily for Zoom calls, treatment planning, or collaborative discussion. Custom desks and floating shelves provide ample storage while keeping the space open and light.
Every element here was chosen to balance functionality with tranquility — a room that enhances productivity while reflecting Dr. Pai’s own thoughtful, intentional approach to care.
