When our San Diego clients asked us for an ADA bathroom remodel that would let them age in place, how could we resist?

Meet Project Gabilan: an ADA bathroom remodel designed to support aging in place, without sacrificing style. Our clients wanted a bathroom that would grow with them, so it had to be safe and easy to use, but also calm, warm, and beautiful.

The Challenge
The bathroom was split into two closed-off rooms. It was also poorly lit, with little storage for linens and toiletries.
“When we first saw the bathroom, it felt cramped and outdated,” our clients shared. “We wanted a space that was safer and more open but still felt warm and welcoming.” In particular, they needed a curbless shower with room for a walker or wheelchair, plus space for a helper if needed. And above all, the room couldn’t feel clinical.

Our Solution
First, we removed the dividing wall and door to open up wide, accessible walkways. Then we paired thoughtful ADA features with warm materials and clean finishes, so every safety detail blends into the design.
An Open, Curbless Shower for an ADA Bathroom Remodel
We expanded the shower so there’s room for mobility aids and assisted bathing. A built-in shelf keeps essentials within easy reach. In addition, soft lighting beneath the shelf adds a warm, ambient glow.

Grab Bars That Blend In
We installed grab bars in both the shower and toilet areas. Some of them also double as towel bars, so there’s always something to hold onto without the room feeling institutional.

A Custom Vanity With Smart Storage
A single-sink custom vanity brings warmth and function. Deep drawers hold toiletries, while a tall linen cabinet above keeps everything organized. We chose pulls instead of knobs for an easier grip. Finally, soft under-cabinet lighting creates a gentle glow for nighttime use.

The Result: An ADA Bathroom Remodel That Feels Like Home
In the end, this ADA bathroom remodel delivered a bright, open primary bath that’s safe and easy to use now and for years to come. Best of all, it’s every bit as beautiful as it is accessible.
“Working with the ASR Design Studio team on our bathroom remodel was a wonderful experience. They really listened to our concerns about safety and accessibility, and turned our cramped, outdated space into something open, warm, and welcoming. The grab bars are thoughtfully integrated, the layout flows beautifully, and we feel confident the design will support us for years to come. We couldn’t be happier with the result.”
