Project GC Reveal: A Space Built to Grow Into

For me design is not just about aesthetics; it’s a celebration of people—who they are, what they cherish, and the vibrant ways they experience life in their homes.

A toddler’s room shouldn’t feel like a nursery she’s outgrowing, or a teenager’s room she hasn’t grown into yet. It should feel like exactly where she is right now — and stretch a little further with her.

Our client came to us with a bedroom that already had good bones — they didn’t need a renovation, they needed a designer’s eye to pull it all together into something that felt cohesive, joyful, and genuinely personal. This was a furnishing and styling project from start to finish: layering color, texture, and personality into an existing room until it felt complete. You can see more transformations like this one in our portfolio.

THE APPROACH

Our brief was simple: build a room that feels playful without feeling chaotic, colorful without feeling overstimulating, and personal enough that it could only belong to her.

A Bed That Anchors the Whole Room

We started with the bed, since it’s the visual anchor of any bedroom and the place every other decision gets measured against. A rich walnut headboard brings warmth and a more grown-up sensibility — this is a room designed to last well beyond the toddler years, not something she’ll need to replace in a season. Layered on top, a sage-blue velvet duvet softens the wood tone and gives the whole room its calming, easy-breathing base color.

From there, we let personality take over. A blush corduroy lumbar pillow runs the full width of the headboard, providing the perfect cozy backdrop for a beloved Moana doll who has clearly claimed her spot as the room’s official welcoming committee. Crisp white pillowcases keep the palette from feeling too saturated, letting the color moments — the bedding, the pillow, the curtains — really sing.

Color as the Star: A Custom Window Treatment Story

If there’s one design decision that defines this room, it’s the window. We worked with TWOPAGES Curtains to layer drapery and motorized roman shades.

OUTER LAYER — DRAPERY

The motorized shade does the daily work — room darkening for naps and bedtime, controlled with a single remote click rather than a cord, which matters enormously in a toddler’s room. The mustard pinch-pleat drapery layered on top is the real style statement: an unapologetic, saturated color that reads as sophisticated rather than juvenile, and the thread that ties every other element in the room together.

Nightstands That Do Double Duty

Space was tight, so we chose walnut nightstands with an open lower shelf and a single drawer — enough storage for the essentials without visually weighing down the room. A whimsical, ceramic vase holds a fresh orchid on one side; a small stack of favorite books and a scalloped, lamp shade brings in a playful, textural moment that still feels considered rather than cluttered.

Lighting
Scalloped striped lamp shades on sculptural curved bases — a detail that reads as more art object than appliance.
Art
A grid of hand-painted color dots above the headboard, framed simply in white. Playful without being literal — abstract enough to grow with her and can easily be changed/updated.
Styling details
Fresh orchids, a softly scented candle, and a small stack of favorite books bring warmth and daily ritual into the space.

A Reading and Play Nook Built for Right Now — and Later

Around the corner from the bed, an open shelving system creates a dedicated reading and play zone. Deep charcoal shelves hold board books, a child-sized piano, a favorite rocket toy, and labeled bins to keep small toys contained. Below, a row of drawers with sweet hot-air-balloon pulls adds deeper storage, while a flip clock and a few framed art prints bring in personality without committing to a full theme.

Two pastel dinosaur-shaped stools tuck neatly under the desk, and a soft reading chair nearby — draped with a beloved astronaut-print quilt — rounds out the kind of cozy corner that gets used every single day.

Grounding It All: A Rainbow Rug

Underfoot, a hand-knotted rainbow rug in warm, muted tones ties the entire color story together — pulling from the mustard drapery, the sage bedding, and the blush accents without ever feeling matchy. It’s playful in the way a child’s room should be playful: joyful first, with the sophistication built in so it ages gracefully as she does

A System That Grows and Reconfigures: The Elfa Closet System

The desk, shelving, and drawer wall — along with the closet just behind the bed — are all built on the Elfa system, and it’s genuinely one of our favorite tools for spaces that need to evolve over time. Elfa is a track-based, modular shelving system: every shelf, drawer bank, and desk surface mounts onto a wall-anchored rail, which means the entire configuration can be adjusted, expanded, or completely reconfigured without patching a single hole or replacing a single piece.

That flexibility mattered enormously here. Right now, the desk surface sits at toddler height with open shelving for board books and toys within easy reach, and a deep drawer bank handles bulkier storage. As she grows, the desk height, shelf spacing, and drawer placement can all shift to match — the same hardware and rail system simply gets reconfigured rather than torn out and replaced. It’s a genuinely smart investment for a child’s room: one system that can serve a toddler’s playroom today and a homework station years from now. We used the same Elfa system inside the closet, just out of frame behind the bed — keeping the storage language consistent throughout the room and making it just as easy to reconfigure hanging space, bins, and shelving as her wardrobe and needs change over the years

The Result

This was never about designing a “kid’s room” in the generic sense — it was about designing a space for a specific little girl, with room to grow into her own taste over time. Every piece, from the nightstands to the dinosaur stools to the grid of color-dot art, was chosen with real intention: playful, warm, and built to last well past this particular season of her childhood.

That’s the part of furnishing and styling work we love most — taking a room that already has good bones and making it feel completely, unmistakably like the person who lives in it.
