Project GC Reveal: A Space Built to Grow Into

A toddler’s room shouldn’t feel like a nursery she’s outgrowing. It also shouldn’t feel like a teen room she hasn’t grown into yet. Good toddler bedroom design meets her exactly where she is now, and then stretches a little further with her.

This one is personal: it’s our own daughter’s room. We needed a space for our baby that could grow with her, so we approached it as a furnish-and-style project. We layered color, texture, and personality until the room felt cohesive, joyful, and unmistakably hers. You can see more transformations like this in our portfolio.

The Challenge

Before, this room was a home office, with a dark teal accent wall, two desks, and white shelving built around a TV. Now it had to handle naps and bedtime, keep books and toys from taking over, and grow with her instead of being outgrown in a season.

Our toddler bedroom design brief was simple. Build a room that feels playful but not chaotic, and colorful but not overstimulating. Above all, make it personal enough that it could only belong to her.

Our Solution

Toddler Bedroom Design Starts With the Bed

We started with the bed, because it’s the visual anchor of any bedroom. We chose a custom walnut bed from Etsy with storage built in underneath, so extra bedding and toys have a home. The rich walnut also brings warmth and a more grown-up feel. That’s intentional, since this room should last well beyond the toddler years. Then, a sage-blue velvet duvet softens the wood tone and gives the room its calm base color.

From there, we let personality take over. A blush corduroy lumbar pillow runs the full width of the headboard. It also makes a cozy backdrop for a beloved Moana doll, the room’s official welcoming committee. Meanwhile, crisp white pillowcases keep the palette from feeling too saturated. As a result, the color moments (bedding, pillow, and curtains) really sing.

Color as the Star: A Custom Window Treatment Story

If one design decision defines this room, it’s the window. For this, we partnered with TWOPAGES Curtains to layer drapery over motorized roman shades.

The motorized shade does the daily work. It darkens the room for naps and bedtime with one click of a remote. Because there’s no cord, it’s also a safer choice in toddler bedroom design. On top, the mustard pinch-pleat drapery is the real style statement. The color is bold and saturated, yet it reads as sophisticated rather than juvenile. In fact, it’s the thread that ties the whole room together.

Nightstands That Do Double Duty

In toddler bedroom design, space is often tight. Here, we chose walnut nightstands with an open lower shelf and a single drawer. That gives her enough storage for the essentials without weighing the room down. On one side, a whimsical ceramic vase holds a fresh orchid. On the other, a small stack of favorite books sits beside a scalloped lamp. Together, they add a playful, textural moment that still feels considered.

Art
A grid of hand-painted color dots hangs above the headboard in simple white frames. It’s playful without being literal. Plus, it’s abstract enough to grow with her, and we can swap it out anytime.

Fresh orchids, a softly scented candle, and a small stack of favorite books bring warmth and daily ritual into the space.

A Reading Nook: Toddler Bedroom Design for Now and Later

Around the corner from the bed, open shelving creates a dedicated reading and play zone. The deep charcoal shelves hold board books, a child-sized piano, and a favorite rocket toy. Labeled bins also keep small toys contained. Below, a row of drawers with sweet hot-air-balloon pulls adds deeper storage. Finally, a flip clock and a few framed prints bring in personality without committing to a full theme.

Two pastel dinosaur stools tuck neatly under the desk. Nearby, a soft reading chair with an astronaut-print quilt completes the corner. It’s the kind of cozy spot she uses every single day.

Grounding It All: A Rainbow Rug

Underfoot, a hand-knotted rainbow rug in warm, muted tones ties the color story together. It pulls from the mustard drapery, the sage bedding, and the blush accents. However, it never feels matchy. On the walls, we used Dunn-Edwards Lace Veil (DE6372), a soft, light neutral that lets the colors shine. In other words, it’s playful the way good toddler bedroom design should be: joyful first, with enough sophistication to age gracefully as she does.

Storage That Grows With Her: The Elfa System

The desk, shelving, and drawer wall all run on the Elfa system, and so does the closet behind the bed. It’s one of our favorite tools for spaces that need to evolve. Elfa is a modular, track-based system. Every shelf, drawer bank, and desk surface hangs on a wall-anchored rail. As a result, you can adjust, expand, or fully reconfigure the layout without patching holes or buying new pieces.

That flexibility mattered here. Right now, the desk sits at toddler height, and the open shelves keep books and toys within easy reach. Meanwhile, a deep drawer bank handles bulkier storage. As she grows, we can raise the desk, respace the shelves, and move the drawers. We simply reconfigure the same rails instead of tearing anything out. That makes Elfa a smart investment in toddler bedroom design: today’s playroom becomes tomorrow’s homework station.

We also used Elfa inside the closet, replacing the old office drawers with a system that can change with her. Plus, she can adjust hanging space, bins, and shelves as her wardrobe changes over the years.

The Result: Toddler Bedroom Design That Lasts

This project was never about a generic “kid’s room.” Instead, we designed a space for our little girl, with room to grow into her own taste. We chose every piece with intention, from the walnut bed to the dinosaur stools to the color-dot art. The goal was simple: playful, warm, and made to last well past this season of childhood.

That’s the part of furnishing and styling we love most. We took a room that used to be an office and made it feel unmistakably like the little person who lives in it.
