At Home with Ariel: Primary Bedroom
With a little ingenuity and elbow grease, our founder transformed her unfinished bedroom into a tranquil oasis.
Our founder, Ariel, and her husband bought their new home in San Diego in 2019. After spending hours renovating and customizing their new space, it was time to tackle one of their final projects: the master bedroom.
While they had overcome many hurdles, from project managing various trade vendors to tedious tile-laying, the master bedroom was one of the spaces they were most excited about. They opted for a neutral palette and minimal design that would allow them to unplug and relax, all while giving them the storage space and functionality that they needed.
The room started out as a blank canvas. To add some character—and to increase their shelf space—Ariel decided to design and make a built-in bench and bookshelf along the side of the room. Using 2x4 wood planks, she created a wooden frame for the bench and then built the drawers using plywood. A wooden layer on top gave the doors a Shaker look for an added element of sophistication.
She finished the bench with beautiful white oak top before installing it in their room parallel to their bed. On top of the bench, she constructed a bookshelf made of matching white oak, adding some height to the built-ins and also giving her ample shelf space for books, decorative items, and photos that help to give the room a homey, live-in feel.
They painted the drawers a dark, charcoal grey to elegantly contrast with the oak finish, and bright white vertical paneling makes the room feel taller and larger for a spacious, airy look.
Once the construction was complete, it was simply a matter of adding the finishing touches to bring the room together. A walnut bed frame and matching side tables, grey, white, and cream bedding and accent pillows, grey linen curtains, modern and minimal sconces, and a hand carved eagle from a family friend give the room a cohesive and cozy feel.
