From the first consultation to reveal day, these are the moments when having a professional in your corner makes all the difference — and you know it.
Most people assume the biggest perk of hiring an interior designer is the beautiful finished space. And yes — that’s part of it. But the clients we work with at ASR Design Studio consistently tell us something different. The moments they were most grateful for having a designer weren’t always the glamorous ones.
They were the quiet moments: when a contractor asked a question they had no idea how to answer. When they saw a floor plan come to life for the first time. When the tile they’d fallen in love with online turned out to be backordered, and they needed a Plan B in 48 hours.
This post is for anyone wondering whether hiring an interior designer is truly worth it. Spoiler: these six moments will make the answer very clear.
“You understood what I wanted better than I could even explain it.” —
what our clients say, every single time

What Does an Interior Designer Actually Bring to the Table?
We hear this a lot: “Can’t I just figure it out on Pinterest?” You can — up to a point. But here’s what Pinterest can’t give you: 18 years of on-site problem-solving experience, trade-only access to furniture and materials not available to the public, the ability to produce detailed construction drawings and renderings that communicate your vision to your contractor and a deep working knowledge of building codes, lighting, spatial flow, and material performance.
Interior design is part creative vision, part project management, part advocacy, and part technical execution. We don’t just make things look beautiful — we make sure every decision serves you, your family, and the way you actually live.
01 | WHEN WE WALK YOU THROUGH THE ENTIRE DESIGN PROCESS
For most homeowners, a major remodel or furnishing project is something that happens once, maybe twice in a lifetime. For us, it’s every single project. We’ve guided hundreds of clients through timelines, contractor coordination, material lead times, installation sequencing, and the thousand small decisions that happen between “let’s start” and “we’re done.”
When you work with ASR Design Studio, we map out the entire process at the start — what’s happening when, who’s responsible for what, and what you’ll need to decide and by when. No surprises. No suddenly urgent requests that derail your week. You know the plan, and we manage it.
| ASR TIP | Ask any designer you’re interviewing: “Can you walk me through exactly how your process works from discovery call to reveal day?” The answer tells you everything about how organized and experienced they actually are. |
The questions we hear most often at this stage: “How long will this take?” / “How involved do I need to be?” / “Can we stay on budget?” — and we answer all of them before work begins.
02 | WHEN WE GATHER EVERY DETAIL ABOUT YOUR PROJECT GOALS
The intake and discovery phase is more important than most people realize. This is where we ask lots questions to get familiar with who you are and how you want to live your life . Do you work from home? How often do you entertain? Are there kids, pets, aging parents, or mobility needs to plan around? Do you want this space to age with you, or are you designing for right now?
Without a thorough discovery process, you end up mid-project with a contractor asking “wait, you need a desk in here?” when the electrical plan is already done. We’ve seen it happen — and we’ve saved clients from it happening.
We document everything. Every want, every concern, every dealbreaker and dream. Nothing slips through the cracks because we’ve built a process specifically designed to catch what gets missed.
Our clients don’t have to worry about what they forgot to mention. We know what to ask.
03 | WHEN YOU SEE YOUR DESIGN PRESENTATION FOR THE FIRST TIME
This is, hands-down, the moment most of our clients describe as their favorite part of the whole project. You’ve shared your vision — your lifestyle, your priorities, and your Pinterest boards. We’ve taken all of it, combined it with what we know about your space, flow, and function, and turned it into something real.
The design presentation typically includes floor plans, curated material and finish samples (things you can actually touch and feel), 3D renderings of key spaces, furniture selections and plumbing/appliance specifications, and a clear explanation of every choice and why it was made for you specifically.
We’ve had clients tear up at this stage. Not because it’s overwhelming — because for the first time, they can actually see their home. The one they’d been imagining but couldn’t quite picture.
What separates a great design presentation from a good one? It should feel inevitable — like of course this is what the space should be. Every choice should feel like it was made for you, not pulled from a template.
04 | WHEN CONSTRUCTION OR INSTALLATION BEGINS
This is the phase that makes most homeowners most anxious — and understandably so. Your home is disrupted. There are strangers in your space. Decisions are being made daily, sometimes hourly. Dust, noise, and the occasional “we ran into something unexpected” are part of the process.
Having an experienced designer working closely with your general contractor during this phase is invaluable. We review the work, flag anything that doesn’t match the approved plans, answer trade questions in real time, and act as your advocate on site. When something needs to change — and something always needs to change — we manage it so that you’re informed but not burdened.
| ASR TIP | If a contractor or trade professional ever asks you to make a aesthetic decision on the fly during construction — that’s exactly when you want your designer on speed dial. Those snap decisions have long-term consequences. |
05 | EVERY TIME A QUESTION COMES UP MID-PROJECT
Interior design projects are living, breathing things. Even the most carefully planned project will produce unexpected questions. The carpenter asks whether the trim should extend all the way into the corner. The electrician needs to know the exact hang height for the pendant over the island. The installer isn’t sure how far to offset the sconce from the mirror centerline.
These aren’t big questions — but they feel huge when you’re the one being asked, you have one chance to answer correctly, and you don’t have the experience to know what the right answer looks like.
We do. We’ve answered these questions hundreds of times. We know what a too-low pendant looks like when the cabinets go in. We know when trim decisions affect the whole room’s proportions. And we explain our reasoning — so you understand not just what we’re recommending, but why it’s the right call for your specific space.
One decision made wrong at this stage can cost thousands to fix. One designer on the call can prevent it entirely.
06 | ON REVEAL DAY, WHEN YOU SEE IT ALL COME TOGETHER
This is what everything has been building toward. The space is complete. Everything is installed, styled, and ready. And you walk in.
Clients who attempt major projects without a designer often describe a version of this moment that’s tinged with doubt. “Does the rug look off?” “Should the nightstands be taller?” “Is this tile going to look dated in three years?” Without a guiding vision and a professional eye overseeing every selection, it’s easy to end up with a room that feels incomplete — not because anything is wrong, necessarily, but because nothing was chosen as part of a cohesive whole.
When we reveal a finished space, our clients don’t experience that doubt. They experience the feeling they’ve been working toward: a home that looks exactly right, feels completely like them, and functions better than anything they could have pulled off alone.
That’s what we build toward, every single project.
“I couldn’t have done this without you” — and that’s exactly the point. You didn’t have to.
