Kitchen Design: Balancing Aesthetics and Functionality

If you ever tried to design a kitchen on your own, you understand how tricky it can be to balance aesthetics and functionality. We have been through this process at ASR Design Studio in San Diego many times.

Kitchens are one of the hardest spaces in the home to get right. You have to balance the functionality of the space, which is the most important aspect, with the aesthetics, electrical and plumbing. Today, we’re diving into everything about style and functionality so you can have the kitchen of your dreams.

What to consider when creating your dream kitchen

Kitchen design in San Diego is huge, and we promise there is plenty to consider when designing from scratch or giving your kitchen a facelift.

How much do you use your kitchen?

When considering your kitchen design in San Diego, you have to understand how much you actually use your kitchen. For some of us, we think we are total Master Chefs (I can almost hear some of you shouting back ‘Yes chef!’), whereas others don’t mind working with just the microwave. This is a no-judgment zone here, friend! Whatever works for you works!

You also have to take into consideration your family. If you’ve got a huge family you might need a double stove, or if it’s just you and your partner, then you can probably get away with standard appliances. You have a great understanding of how you currently use the space, what your pain points are, and what you want to change. Kitchen design is all about putting those frustrations to good use!

Before you begin, have a clear understanding of what you want

Kitchen designs are notorious for costly mistakes. While it’s certainly an investment, it’s an investment that you want to get right the first time. We always recommend to our clients that they clearly understand what they want before we pick up the sledgehammer. And psst, if you're interested in how our process works, read all about it here.

Now we're all down for a nice scroll, and Pinterest or Instagram is perfect for creating a board of everything you want in your dream kitchen and a list of everything you need. Again, doing this before you get to any design stage is great because you clearly understand what you want to achieve from a project. This is key to ensuring you get the aesthetic you’re after.

Be flexible with your budget

When you work with a design studio like ASR, we'll be transparent about all the numbers and digits so you know exactly where every cent is going. However, with this being said, we also recommend that people should be flexible with their budget, especially when doing a kitchen. It’s so much easier to create change during a project than to wait until after and re-evaluate what you’ve done. While spending that extra 5K might be frustrating at the time, it’s definitely worth it in the long run, and you usually end up saving more.

Aesthetic

When it comes to kitchens, there are plenty of different styles and ways to design your kitchen. What style you decide to go for will depend on your home's current aesthetic. While we can’t see into your kitchen, we’ve listed below a few points that’ll help create a dreamy and aesthetic kitchen.

Integrated appliances

If you’ve ever seen those seamless kitchens on the gram, you know exactly what we say here when we mean integrated appliances. Anything integrated is hidden by cabinetry, so it fits seamlessly with your kitchen. Not only does this hide your appliances, but it also makes your kitchen look much cleaner 24/7.

Insider Tip!

As much as we love integrated appliances, we feel like they need to come with a warning sign. Often, our clients don’t realize that they can sometimes cost a little more than stainless steel appliances.  At the end of the day, it's really about what you value most and how we can infuse that into your kitchen.

Style until you can’t style anymore

Often, what sets interior designers apart is the level of detail that we go into when designing and styling. Think of styling as the jewelry you put on to complete your outfit. It’s all about finding the pieces that work within the space and accentuating the existing features. This is incredibly underrated and can have the biggest transformational change in anyone’s kitchen.

Taking the time to declutter the counter, give your kitchen a good clean and embrace some styling items will do you wonders. A lot of the time, styling items are things we already have lying around in our kitchen. This can be anything from gorgeous recipe books, salt and pepper shakers, mortar and pestle, and even luxurious tea towels. Add a few plants for some greenery and fresheners, and you have a beautifully styled kitchen counter in no time.

Add texture

Often, when we see our clients' kitchens, it’s usually a whole lot of tiles and not a lot of texture. Texture in interior design and in a kitchen can be many different things, and it’s easily incorporated. Use some wooden chopping boards as styling pieces, just like we did in Project Bonview, or add texture with brushed copper tapware. This is a great way to add depth and richness to your kitchen aesthetic.

Functionality

Ok now, as much as we love an aesthetic kitchen, it has to be functional. Combining these two elements is the backbone of great kitchen design.

Layout

One of the most important functional elements of your kitchen is the layout. This determines how you use your kitchen and how you move around. Depending on your current kitchen in San Diego, your budget restrictions, and electrical and plumbing, you can change a certain amount of your layout. However, we always refer to the triangle method for those who can.

This method refers to the three workstations that each kitchen has. A cooking area (usually your stove), food preparation area (usually an island or counter) and storage (usually your fridge). When an invisible line is drawn between the three of them, it should make up a triangle. This trick has been around for years and is practically foolproof!

Get Organized

If you’ve ever stepped foot in an unorganized kitchen, you’ll know how much stress it can add to your nighttime routine. Our homes are an oasis. We want to feel safe, calm and stress-free. That’s why, as much as this tip could be aesthetic based, it’s truly all about functionality. Get organized to function freely and enjoy making dinner rather than dreading it. We love heading to The Container Store! Before you go, be sure to take all of the measurements you need.

Don’t forget the lighting

We’ve spoken about lighting before and will talk about it again. Lighting in your home, kitchen, or any room, for that matter, will make a huge difference to the overall design and feel of the space. Although lighting can be an aesthetic choice, it should consider practicality more than anything else. With your kitchen lighting, ensure you have enough lighting to light up the space fully and even better if you can have natural light flooding in through your windows.

Insider Tip!

Although lighting in your kitchen is all about functionality, don’t forget to add some mood lighting. This is for when the kids are gone to bed, and Mom is staying up with her girlfriends to have a much-needed wine and girl talk after a long day!

Have more questions…

  • As an experienced designer, I would advise caution when considering a DIY kitchen renovation. While taking on a DIY project can be rewarding, kitchen renovations often involve complex tasks such as cabinetry installation, plumbing, and electrical work that require specialized skills. Without proper expertise, there's a risk of costly mistakes and safety hazards. It's important to consider the scale of the renovation, your experience with similar projects, and the time and resources you can invest. Consulting with professionals and researching extensively can help you make an informed decision based on your specific circumstances.

  • A full kitchen renovation is a significant endeavor, and understanding the timeline is crucial for effective planning. Typically, the duration of a complete kitchen renovation can range from 8 to 12 weeks, although this can vary based on several factors such as the size of the kitchen, the extent of the renovation, and any unforeseen complications. The process usually involves multiple stages, including design planning, demolition, installation of new fixtures and appliances, electrical and plumbing work, and finishing touches like painting and flooring. It's important to work closely with professionals to establish a realistic timeline that accounts for all these steps and any potential delays.By having a clear understanding of the typical timeline for a full kitchen renovation, homeowners can make informed decisions and effectively manage their expectations throughout the process.

  • If you're looking to refresh your kitchen without diving into a full renovation, there are several quick and effective tips to consider. Start by updating the cabinet hardware for an instant and affordable transformation. Adding a fresh coat of paint to your cabinets or walls can also breathe new life into the space. Introducing potted plants, stylish kitchen rugs, or new light fixtures can inject personality and charm. Furthermore, organizing and decluttering the countertops can create a more spacious and inviting environment. Finally, consider replacing old faucets and installing a statement backsplash to add a modern touch. With these simple changes, you can achieve a significant makeover without the hassle of a complete renovation.
