Choosing a color scheme for your home or even a room within your home is a lot! We get that color can be overwhelming. I mean, how can it not be? That’s why your go-to residential design team here at ASR Design Studio is ready to give you all the details about how to pick color and some helpful hints along the way to make it so much more enjoyable.

Tips to consider when choosing your room’s color scheme

Yes, you’re on the road to creating your dream home, and we could not be more excited! Your home should be a place you fall in love with over and over again, and color is a huge part of that. When choosing your room color scheme:

What’s the purpose? And what do you want to feel when you are in that room?

There's no doubt that color is powerful. We’ve seen this firsthand when working with our beautiful clients in San Diego, color can make or break a space. So, with this in mind, we always ask our clients, and you should ask yourself the question: what's the purpose of this room?

Color theory has a huge part to play: how we feel, our mood, and the overall vibe the room gives off. A great example of this is in a bedroom. If you want a cool and calm vibe, you can go for a beautiful sky blue, or if you’re looking for something more moody, you could go with a deep, dark forest green. Color will make a huge difference to the aesthetic and the mood!

Start with neutrals and add your accents

When looking at your room’s color scheme and your overall home, it’s always best to start with a neutral base and add in accent colors along the way.

Neutral colors can be broken down into two categories, warm or cool. Warm neutrals will give a cozy vibe; think sweater weather. In contrast, cool colors and cool tones will give off more of a sophisticated look and feel. This leads us to the question: how do you choose the right color scheme for your home? What neutral colors you decide will be completely up to you and what you currently have within your home. This is where we see a lot of people get stuck. Finding that correct undertone to match the rest of your home can be tricky. If you’re struggling with this, get in touch with us. We promise we can help and have fun while doing it. Here is a cool color wheel tool if you need a little extra help.

When in doubt, stick to the color wheel

We totally get it; color is overwhelming! And we promise it’s even harder when trying to find the right color scheme for your home, but when you start feeling overwhelmed, stick to the color wheel. Yes, we are transporting you back to your third grade art class, but your art teacher was definitely onto something.

The color wheel will give you the exact color palettes you can use. They’ll definitely work, and it also gives you a chance to get inspired about all the different color combinations you could try.

HAVE MORE QUESTIONS…

    1. Clarify your goals

    2. Prioritize what truly matters to you

    3. Narrow down choices

  • Absolutely! Changing the color scheme of your home can breathe new life into your space and completely transform the aesthetic. From soothing neutrals to bold, vibrant hues, the right color palette can set the tone for each room and create a cohesive, inviting atmosphere. Whether you're aiming for a contemporary, minimalist look or a cozy, rustic feel, reimagining your home's color scheme is an exciting project that can reflect your personal style and preferences. Our team at ASR Design Studio is dedicated to helping you navigate through various color options, offering expert advice and recommendations to make your vision a reality. • If you're ready to infuse your home with bold, vibrant colors without creating a chaotic or overwhelming atmosphere, there are several design strategies to consider. Start by selecting a primary color that resonates with your vision, and then layer in complementary shades to create a cohesive yet impactful palette. Consider using the 60-30-10 rule, where 60% of the room is dominated by a primary color, 30% by a secondary color, and 10% by an accent color. Incorporating bold colors through accent walls, statement furniture pieces, and strategically placed accessories can establish a powerful visual impact without overwhelming the space. Additionally, balancing bold colors with neutral elements such as white walls, natural wood tones, and metallic finishes can help create a harmonious and polished look. Embracing bold colors in moderation and pairing them with thoughtful design elements will ensure that your space exudes vibrancy and character while maintaining a sense of sophistication and balance.

Keep it cohesive

When picking the perfect color scheme for each room, it can be easy to get too excited and pick up a bright red or yellow color that you absolutely love, but we have to stop you right there. As much as we love bold colors, who doesn’t? You have to think about color long-term and what you’re going to enjoy. In addition, you have to think about how colors will make you feel. So, while you might love that bright, fiery red, it might not be the most calming color in your living room. Instead, create impact by remaining cohesive with the rest of your home. This means bringing the same tones and warmth and using them in different variations.

Insider Tip!

If you want to go bold with colors but don’t feel like committing to the entire room, use your bold color as an accent. This is a great way to get the best of both worlds!

Use tools to help you visualize

By now, surely you all know that we’re huge fans of Pinterest? Yep, we can scroll and get inspiration for hours! Pinterest is great because not only do you get inspired, but you can put together a mood board.

But we must let you in on a little secret: the Canva Colors. Seriously, this tool is the best-kept secret ever. You can use the color palette generator, look up color meanings, get inspired by color palette ideas or use the color wheel. Oh, and did we mention it’s 100% free? While it won’t paint your room for you, it’s a great place to start, visualize what you’re thinking and have some fun playing around with all the different possibilities.

How to pick the perfect color of paint

Now we’re getting into the nitty-gritty of how to pick the perfect paint color for your home. We could talk for hours and hours about this. Seriously, with 1,000,001 colors to choose from, it is no wonder people struggle but never fear. We are here to help!

Get inspired

Before you do anything else, you need to have a vision in mind. Go crazy with a mood board on Pinterest. This is the best way to visually see what you want to achieve in your room's color scheme. Don’t just stick to Pinterest, either. There’s plenty of inspiration out there. Take photos of fabrics, colors and anything else that piques your interest.

Go crazy with swatches and then refine

After you’ve got your vision in mind, it’s time to head to your local hardware store. Ideally, you want to take something from your room or home color scheme so that you can compare this to the paint swatches. This also helps to bring out the color in a different light. When you’re there, grab what peaks your interest, but we say no more than 10. Take all these home and into the room you're looking to paint. Now that you can see them against the room’s lighting and your furniture, narrow it down to your top three.

Test, test, test

Now, we know you’re excited about opening a fresh can of paint, but before you do, it’s all about testing your paint color so you can see the variations. We recommend trying your paint over 48 hours. The best way to do this is to paint a swatch in the room you are considering.  Pick a dark area and an area next to light to see how different the color will look based on how much light it is getting. Look at the paint for the next day or two at different times of the day so you can see how the color changes throughout the day.

Insider Tip!

Don’t be afraid to really take your time here. As much as paint is replaceable, you're investing into your home, so it's better to take an extra week to decide so it doesn't become a costly mistake in a month's time!
