Where to start?

Okay, let’s talk about where to start. Organizing your closet can be overwhelming, to say the least. Especially if you haven’t organized your closet in years (guilty as charged). But never fear — organization is our jam, and we’ve got all the tips to prove it.

To start, you want to take everything out of your closet. Yes, we mean everything. It’s best to start with a blank canvas.

Once everything is laid out, create three different piles:

  1. Keep

  2. Donate

  3. Toss

Take each item and put it into one of these three piles. Keep what you love and wear, donate what’s still in good condition, and throw away what is in poor condition.

Now that you have gone through all of your clothes it’s time to start putting things back together. You can opt to stick with your existing closet system or upgrade to a new closet system from a store like Lowes, IKEA, or The Container Store.

Oh, and don’t forget: a well-organized closet always starts with the amount of hanging, shelf, and drawer space you have available. You will want to take note of how much space you have before you start purchasing a storage system or accessories for your closet.

Here’s How to create a personalized closet

Personalizing your closet will create a functional space that you love and will add value not only to your home but to your life. Check out our tips below to maximize your storage solutions.

Use matching hangers

To create a cohesive looking space, you want to make sure to purchase matching hangers. Avoid using wood or clunky hangers, as they take up premium space in your closet. We recommend using velvet hangers or non-slip rubberized hangers. If you want to get fancy, you can purchase the Marie Kondo hangers.

Use Drawer organizers

If you have any drawers in your wardrobe, you know how easy it is to toss your clothes in there and forget about them. Take account of what you own and how much space you need for your socks, underwear, bras, t-shirts, pajamas, workout clothes, and anything else you might keep tucked away.

Measure inside your drawers, purchase storage inserts that match the dimensions and the products you are going to be placing inside the drawers. We love The Container Store as they have every type of drawer organizer that you could need to get and stay organized.

Don’t neglect lighting

While lighting is not part of getting organized, it’s important to be able to see what you have in your closet and to see while you’re trying on clothes. We recommend placing recessed lights, light bars, or LED strip lighting in 3000 to 4000 kelvin range for the most natural looking lighting.

PRO TIP: Put your closet light on a motion sensor so it will automatically turn on every time you open your closet doors.

Organize by color

For anyone who loves a color-coordinated moment (and really, who doesn’t?!), this is your time to shine! Organize your closet by color. Yes, it can totally look like something off of a Pinterest board! Having your closet organized by color makes it so easy when packing for a vacation or even just getting ready for your day. Also, it looks so incredible!

Create an ‘outfit of the day’ hook

While we’re on the topic of getting ready for your day, we have a tip that could totally revolutionize your mornings. If you don’t use this tip already, be prepared to be blown away. Dedicate a hook or space in your wardrobe for an ‘outfit of the day’. The night before, plan out what you’re going to wear to work or your weekend brunch date. Sit back and feel the stress of “what do I wear?” slowly disappear.

If you need a little more encouragement to get yourself organized for the day, then grab something like wood wall hooks. Who would have thought adding organization to your closet could look so stylish?!

INSIDER TIP: We’re taking a moment to pause and reiterate that you don’t need to spend a heap of money to achieve your dream closet. Take full advantage of cost-effective options from Amazon, The Container Store, and Target. Don’t forget to use what you have, too!

Use a jewelry organizer

Is there anything worse than searching for a necklace and it’s completely tangled in amongst rings, earrings, and everything else in that bowl of jewelry you’ve been avoiding?! It’s the worst! If you have the space for in-drawer jewelry storage, we highly recommend it. Otherwise, grab a countertop version!

INSIDER TIP: Here are a few things to keep handy in your closet.

  • Lint roller

  • Double-sided tape

  • Scissors

  • Tide pen

  • Snag repair tool

  • Shaver for pilled sweaters

include a full-length mirror

A floor length mirror in your closet or bedroom is essential for getting ready in the morning. You want to select a space where you can hang the mirror on a wall or door so that you can stand back and see yourself from head to toe (ideally 4-6 feet back). Measure the space so when you select your mirror you can make sure you are choosing the right size.

Shoe Organization

don’t forget a shoe organizer

Don’t you just wish you could have as many shoes as Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and The City? Well, we sure do! While you might not have that many pairs of shoes, it shouldn’t stop you from keeping them organized! Investing in a shoe organizer that fits your closet is practical and will keep your shoes from ending up all over the floor.

use decorative bins

Let’s talk about vertical space. We can almost guarantee that most closets have the above space that is too high up for you to reach, but it’s filled with a whole heap of junk you don’t use. Don’t worry, we’ve been there. Well, our hot take is to use that space but make it practical and pretty. Grab a few decorative bins and organize your seasonal or lesser-used items. That way, they don’t take up precious real estate and also create some visual interest.

If you feel that the top of your closet fills up quickly each year, a great way to avoid this is to reorganize seasonally. This gives you a chance to donate and sort through the clothes, keeping you on top of your organization.

Create a space for a laundry hamper

Who said your laundry hamper has to be an eyesore?! That is definitely not the case. We’re here for pretty laundry hampers that are also 100% practical. And yes, we promise you can find some space in your closet during the organizing process. We love laundry baskets on rollers as it makes getting your laundry to the laundry room that much easier. Check out these canvas laundry bins that we are in love with.

INSIDER TIP: If you’re a handbag or clutch fanatic, then you absolutely need a handbag box! Grab yourself a cute basket or small box and add in your handbag essentials. That way, when you’re swapping from bag to bag, all of your essentials are in one spot. Genius!
