7 Secrets to a Smooth-Running Family Bathroom

Family bathroom organization

We’ve all seen those scenes in a movie: the family running around like crazy in the morning, the siblings fighting over the bathroom, and everyone leaving the house feeling completely scattered. Yeah, we’re not doing that over here at ASR! Let’s create a family bathroom that works for your family, not against your family. Let’s dive into the 7 secrets we are dying to share with you.

Secret #1 — storage, storage, storage

If everyone’s makeup and shampoo and shaving kits are all over the counter, you can expect chaos. Not only will you be knocking things off the counter at every turn, you’ll become frustrated with each other. Nobody wants that. Instead, use storage to separate out spaces for each member of the family where they can store their things.

Maybe you have built-in storage, and everyone gets their own drawer. Or, if you don’t have much built-in storage, get a cute shelf or rolling cart and give everyone their own space. Put pretty baskets (like these!) on the shelves to keep things contained.

Secret #2 — multiple sinks

By having more than one sink, not everyone will need to crowd around the same one. This keeps the morning and evening routines on track as everyone’s getting ready for their day or to go to bed, and it allows you to keep things stored throughout the bathroom, rather than all right by one sink.

Secret #3 — Functionality

When you’re putting the room together, think about functionality. For example, you don’t want the towel hooks several feet away from where you step out of the shower. You don’t want perfumes right under a window where the sun will ruin them. Think through how you’ll actually use the bathroom, and rearrange, organize, and decorate the space as you go. Have the whole family participate, too!

Secret #4 — have a separate room for the toilet, if possible

This means someone can use the bathroom while someone else is using the shower or getting ready. Maybe you have separate bathrooms for this already, or maybe you have the toilet in a small separate room outside of the main bathroom. Of course, this isn’t a DIY fix, but when it comes time to renovate, think about implementing this. (Need some help with that bathroom reno? Let’s chat.)

Secret #5 — use towel hooks

Swap out the traditional towel bar for some towel hooks. This way each family member gets their own hook, and all the towels won’t be crowded on one bar…getting soggy…cue the nightmares.

Secret #6 — use a medicine cabinet

A medicine cabinet is the perfect place to store things. It’s in a handy place, and can hide behind something pretty — the mirror! If you want to go the extra mile, put a small basket in there for each member of the family where they can keep medications, toothbrushes, and other daily-use items.

secret #7 — create spaces outside the bathroom for getting ready

This can look like a vanity in the bedroom for putting on makeup or a mirror by the door for putting your hair up. This gives people another space to do those things so the traffic in and out of the bathroom can decrease a bit — and be a lot smoother.

We can’t wait to see how your bathroom turns out after you try some of these things out! We’re willing to bet it’s going to feel 10x more relaxing. If you want to take this further, check out this blog post about creating a spa-like bathroom.
