Questions We Ask Before Starting an Interior Design Project

Before we dive into any interior design project, we grab some info from our potential clients. We want to make sure the project is a good fit for both of us before we begin. Because here’s the deal: getting your home remodeled or even redesigned is an investment. It takes a bit of time and a bit of cash.

Now over here at ASR Design Studio, we make sure your dream home is worth every penny (and then some) before we roll out the red carpet for the big reveal. But we can’t deny that it’s a big deal to redo your home.

If you’re interested in working with us, here are some questions we’ll be asking. (Or if you’re a fellow interior designer in need of some ideas of what to ask your potential clients, feel free to swipe some of these!)

Question 1: what is the overall goal for this space?

Whether we’re taking on a kitchen remodel or a simple styling project, we want to make sure we’re crystal clear on what you want and need from the space. If we have a clear goal, we can make a clear path to get there!

Question 2: What is working for you in your current space?

Before we go changing things around, we want to know what works so we can double down on that!

Question 3: What is not working for you?

Maybe you’re unable to entertain in the kitchen or work in your home office. Or maybe the living room layout is making you bonk your knee on the coffee table every time you get up. Whatever the case, we want to know what isn’t working so we can axe it asap.

Question 4: What are your main priorities?

We’ll start to draft a list of these and rank what is most important to you as we develop your custom quote for the project. We like to accomplish everything you desire for your home, but based on your budget and the existing space, we’ll make sure to get done what we can for you and your fam.

Question 5: Have you worked with a designer before?

This will give us a bit of insight into your knowledge of the process, as well as what you’d like out of the whole shebang.

Question 6: What made you reach out to us?

Maybe it was a specific project or a specific design style we specialize in. Spill the deets! This will help us tailor the process and final design to your exact likes.

Question 7: Have you had a chance to think about your investment?

We can certainly help with this, but if you have any initial thoughts, let us know! But as we dive into the process, we’ll bust the budget bogeyman to make the financial stuff — dare we say — fun!

Question 8: Is there anything specific you’re looking for?

A coastal themed bedroom, a state-of-the-art coffee bar, lay it on us. We are here to bring your dream home to life and we want to go the extra mile for ya.

Question 9: Tell us in your own words more about your home, your life, and your project.

This will help us get to know you on a more personal level so we can deliver the best result for your lifestyle, interests, and personality.

Question 10: Do you have kids and/or pets and/or allergies?

If we need to nix the feather pillows, let us know! If you have kids or pets, there will also be other design details to consider, from kid-friendly furniture to pet-friendly fabrics.

Hopefully you have an idea of what info to bring to your initial call with your interior designer. And if you want that designer to be us — yay! — head on over here to learn about the process and get started.
