10 Best Ideas to Fill Empty Space in Your Home

Did you just move into a brand new home? As your standing in your empty living room or bedroom and wondering how you are going to fill the space? Bestie, it’s a question we’ve been getting a lot lately, so we decided to put together all of our best tips and tricks to help you out.

Let’s start with your living room

You know, the one that you have no idea what to do with, but you feel like there’s definitely something missing? Psst…we’ll go into details about other specific rooms later, but for now, you can also take this as general advice that can be applied to almost any room.

one: Create different areas with rugs

Rugs are the insider secret to warming up a room and adding structure to a space without adding in walls.

Use rugs to establish different sections of the room or space. A large area rug can be used in the focal area, and smaller rugs can be used to create smaller seating areas or other spaces.

By using rugs, you won’t need to add in walls or more furniture to create zones, so your room can be sectioned without feeling cramped.

two: add a coffee table

Oh, we love a good coffee table. Not only do they help you to further define your living room, it functions as the perfect styling and storage opportunity. Same goes for end tables!

Keep the furniture simple so that it doesn’t overpower the room. Or, allow your coffee table to be the statement piece and have a simpler sofa. It’s all about balance.

Have fun styling with things like pretty books and wooden links.

three: carefully fill the Empty Corner

You want to feel comfortable and relaxed while maintaining a stylish appearance in your living room. Remember, we like pretty and practical! So when you look at the empty corner of your living room, consider what you could include that would add to the space, not just visually but also in a practical sense!

four: Add A Blanket Ladder

A blanket ladder is such a simple piece that brings so much style and organization to a space. Yes, you read that correctly, you just combine a super cute ladder and a few of your favorite throw blankets.

five: Brighten It Up With A Lamp

Sometimes a lamp is all that's needed to finish off that empty space! Not only do they serve the functional purpose of giving you that mood lighting you desperately need, but they also look great! The wide variety of styles and sizes they come in make them ideal for just about every type of space.

six: Add A Statement Chair

We love a statement chair over here at ASR! We’ve been known for using a big ol’ grand chair in Project Claremont and The Port! But seriously, that chair from Project Claremont still has our hearts!

Adding a statement chair to a corner can instantly fill the space and give the room a sense of coziness. When styled perfectly with a throw blanket and small pillow, it makes for the sweetest reading nook.

How To Fill Empty Space In A Bedroom

Okay, we’ve got a secret...surely we’re not the only ones. We're all guilty of having that chair in the corner of the bedroom that accumulates with everyone's laundry and is only cleared out once a week. We’re all guilty of that, right?!

So this is our PSA that it’s out with the laundry chair and in with the stylish, functional, and super cute corner space. Bedroom corners can be tricky to fill, and sometimes they need a little more TLC than just your laundry basket.

seven: Utilize wall murals or stickers

When you think about filling an empty space in a room or corner, usually your mind goes straight to what piece of furniture can I add? While we love that you’re already thinking about how to fill any empty space (you’re 100% our type), one way you can add without taking up any extra space is by using wallpaper or wall decals.

Whatever you choose does not have to be some loud, eye-catching wallpaper. We've got plenty of options at Salt + Citrus that will make for a great, subtle addition. Both of these options are great for those who don’t have the luxury of extra space but still feel that there's something to add.

eight: Add in A Mirror

Next up on the ideas list is a mirror, and with all of the fun styles coming out, this is one that’s worth looking into. Mirrors are the perfect combination of practical and pretty (which, if you haven’t noticed, is one of our mottos over here).

We love that a mirror is your best friend when you’re getting ready to go out, but it can also double as a light reflective surface when placed next to a window or light source, making the space feel larger.

nine: Utilize Plants and Greenery

Plants and greenery are your besties. So even if you’ve got a black thumb, don’t sweat it. We’ve got a plant guide that was made for you. Plants and greenery do two things:

1. They bring life into the space! Whether you place them in your dining room, bathroom, or kitchen, they add a sense of liveliness (literally).

2. A pop of color! Plants and greenery are fantastic for adding contrast and brightening up a space.

If only they could water themselves, we’d have plants in every room of the house!

Psst... if you are worried about killing your plants, then choose fake ones! We promise we’ll never tell!

ten: Create A Gallery Wall

We know what you’re thinking…um a gallery wall? I’m not made of money! And listen, neither are we. But we’ve got some tips for creating a gallery wall that looks incredible but doesn’t eat away at your budget.

When you’re starting to create your gallery wall, start with pictures you already have. These can be family photos, or, let’s be honest, adorable photos of pets because we already have so many of those, am I right? We used family photos in Project De Mayo, and our clients (and us!) were so happy with how it turned out.

Once you’ve picked your photos, venture out and look for some art. While you can pick and choose art from galleries, this can be a little pricey. So, our perfect middle ground and secret to an edgy gallery wall is Society 6. They have almost every kind of print you can think of and come in various sizes, shapes, and price ranges. You’ll be thanking us later!

When you’ve got your photos and have purchased your new art prints, it’s time to plan. Layout all of your prints on the floor and have some fun with different combinations and possibilities. Once they’re hung up, your dining room will be vibrant in no time!
